Orpheus Dreams [nr.1]         Desire

Orpheus Dreams [nr.2]         The tear of Eurydice

* Orpheus was the son of the Sun and the Music. Not only the mortals but, also, the immortal Gods and the wild beasts were softened by his music and lyrics, and gathering around him laid by their fierceness and stood entranced. One spring day, his wife Eurydice, shortly after their marriage, while wandering in the woods, fled, and in fleeing trod upon a snake in the grass, was bitten in the foot and died. Orpheus lamenting, prayed to all who breathed the upper air, both gods and men, and finding it all unavailing resolved to seek his wife in the regions of the dead. Orpheus descended into the valleys of the Death sang his grief and begged for the impossible: to take his beloved Eurydice with him, back to Life. As he sang, all spirits shed tears. The Death itself could not resist, and gave in: Eurydice was called. Orpheus was permitted to take her away with him on one condition, that he should not turn around to look at her 'til they should have reached the Sunlight. Under this condition they proceeded on their way, he leading, she following, through passages dark and steep, in total silence. But Orpheus could not trust the Silence. To assure himself that Eurydice was still following, cast a glance behind him, when instantly she was borne away. Somewhere, Somewhen, Eurydice is waiting for Orpheus, hoping that Death will reunite them – unconditionally - for ever. ________________
